چکیده

Ultrafiltration (UF) is a low-pressure membrane filtration process primarily used to remove turbidity and suspended solids during the production of safe drinking water. As reported by Furukawa (2008), research, coupled with advancements in membrane technology and increasingly stringent regulations, has led to further adoption of low-pressure membranes for treatment of surface water. In many cases, adoption of membrane technology has come in the form of retrofits to existing conventional surface water treatment plants, in which traditional granular media filters are replaced with UF membranes.

Identification and Quantification of Major Organic Foulants in Ultrafiltration of Treated Domestic Wastewater and their Removal by Slow Sand Filtration as Pre-treatment

The present study investigates major organic foulants in ultrafiltration (UF) of treated domestic wastewater and their removal in slow sand filtration. Identification and quantification of major foulants was conducted in labscale experiments. Quantified results suggest that biopolymers (large molecular protein-like and polysaccharidelike materials) are major organic foulants in UF. This conclus...

Comparison of the effects of extracellular and intracellular organic matter extracted from Microcystis aeruginosa on ultrafiltration membrane fouling: dynamics and mechanisms.

Algae organic matter (AOM), including intracellular organic matter (IOM) and extracellular organic matter (EOM), are major membrane foulants in the treatment of algae-polluted water. In this study, the effects of EOM and IOM (at dissolved organic concentrations of 8 mg/L) on the fouling of a poly(ether sulfone) ultrafiltration (UF) membrane were investigated using a dead-end down-flow UF unit. ...

One of the most common problems encountered in water treatment applications of membranes is fouling. Natural organic matter (NOM) represents a particularly problematic foulant. Membranes may be fouled by relatively hydrophilic and/or hydrophobic NOM components, depending on NOM characteristics, membrane properties, and operating conditions. To maximize flux recovery for an NOMfouled ultrafiltra...

Identification of key factors affecting the organic fouling on low-pressure ultrafiltration membranes

The fouling behavior of the hollow fiber ultrafiltration (UF) membrane by the mixtures of dissolved organic matters (DOMs) has been systematically investigated. The organic foulants included humic acid (HA), bovine serum albumin (BSA) and sodium alginate (SA), which represented humic substances, proteins and polysaccharides, respectively. According to the experimental results, the filtration pr...

Prevention of PVDF ultrafiltration membrane fouling by coating MnO2 nanoparticles with ozonation

Pre-treatment is normally required to reduce or control the fouling of ultrafiltration (UF) membranes in drinking water treatment process. Current pre-treatment methods, such as coagulation, are only partially effective to prevent long-term fouling. Since biological activities are a major contributor to accumulated fouling, the application of an oxidation/disinfection step can be an effective c...
